How We Met
Monica's version:
I was sent to Camp Lejeune, NC for pre-deployment training. I was assigned as a squad leader to 2nd squad and decided to take my Marines out for pizza and beer so they could get to know me. (They had already been training together for months and I was the new kid on the block so I had to win them over... what better way to do it than with pizza and beer...). I introduced myself and had all the Marines take turns doing the same. One of the Marines (a really cute one) told me that he loved the Steelers and beer. The other Marines were laughing and punching his arm and joking about what a big party boy he was.
Fast forward about 6 months... now we're in Djibouti, Africa. This particular Marine and I have been working together day in and day out for months. We also spent what little free time we had playing for the Marine Rugby team (which was totally awesome by the way). Anyways... one night I decided to take my squad out in town for dinner. We went to Planet Hollywood and then decided to explore the town some more. We found a pretty cool underground club and the drinking began. After many many Desperados (awesome beer), I found myself on the dance floor in the arms of this cute Marine. He started singing softly into my ear the song "Not Just the Beer Talking" by Cody Prevost. At some point he kissed me (although he swears I kissed him... see HIS version below).
When we got back to the base, I was mortified and could hardly look at him the next day... he was MY Marine! Ugh! The next day I asked him if we really kissed and he said yes. I apologized and he just kind of laughed and said "No... it's okay." Well, that day (and for the next week) I was in a TON of trouble for taking my Marines out drinking in the town and getting rowdy... all the things that Marines are known for. At the end of the night, I was walking back toward my clue and Kevin asked if he could talk to me for a few. We talked for a little while and then he whispered in my ear something I will never forget... he said "I would do anything to make you smile..." and that was it... I was falling. It was the sweetest thing anyone had ever said to me.
We spent our last few weeks in Africa hanging out, playing cards, watching movies and sneaking to spend every minute we possibly could with each other. By the time we got on the plane to come home, I knew I was in love and prayed that somehow we could make it work. He totally surprised me when he said he would move up to Syracuse. We moved in together and it has been happily ever after since...
The Real Story....
I first seen this girl when I was training to search vehicles, and told my friend I hope that she is a Lance Corporal (like we were at the time) because she was really cute. I was then told by my fire team leader to go to the recreation center for pizza and beer. I showed up and the new girl that I seen just hours earlier turned into my squad leader and then I knew that there was nothing I could do to get her to notice me (even though I still thought she was cute). I left the little pizza and beer party early and went to the gym with my buddy. About 6 months later I am working my butt off to try to get her to notice me. I was even volunteering to work extra shifts just so I could spend extra time with her. Then one night she had all of her Marines including me to go out in town for mandatory fun time. We all ate dinner at Planet Hollywood, where I started to have a few Jack and Cokes with a friend. After eating a few of us went to this underground club called Hermes. After having a few Desperados, my friend said he was going to make a move on Sgt. Siegfried. I didn't tell him that I had a crush on her, so he tried to make his move while I kept drinking. About a minute later he came over telling me he got shot down. I was happy because I didn't want to see him with her. I then felt my hand get pulled and someone dragging me to the dance floor. I started dancing and was singing "Its not just the beer talking" by Codie Prevost in her ear. She then started to kiss me. Needless to say I didn't remember this until the next morning when my buddy told me that I was kissing her. What I do remember is the cab ride back to the base. I grabbed her to come into my taxi using the reason that I didn't want to ride in it alone. On the ride back I started to massage her shoulders, trying to build up the courage to kiss her not knowing that I had already done so just a hour earlier. When I finally kissed her, the cab was pulling up to the base and I wished I had more time with her.
The next day I was woken up to someone saying "get dressed you're in trouble for coming back after curfew." Monica took all the blame and no one else got into any trouble. On the walk back my buddy refreshed my memory of what happened the night before, telling me how he couldn't believe that Monica turned him down for me and that she was kissing me every where in the club, the dance floor, by the pool tables, and by the bar. Later that day Monica stopped by my room asking me if we kissed last night. I reassured her that it was ok, and she didn't have to apologize for anything. I smuggled back on base a few bottles of liquor and a few nights later asked Monica to have a drink with me. That night I told her "I would do anything to make her simle." After that I knew she had some feelings for me, and I hoped she felt as strongly as I did.
The last few weeks we spent all the time we could together. We would spend countless nights in smoke pits far away from our rooms hoping to not to get in trouble. These nights would be spent playing cards, watching movies and talking for hours, we would watch the sun rise and realize how late it was and that we needed to get to bed before everyone woke up.
The we came home and I made the choice to move to Syracuse, just to be with her. I have never been happier than I am with Monica.
Well... that's our story and we're sticking to it.
